Intraoperative MRI in neurosurgery: technical overkill or the future of brain surgery?

The development of image-guided neurosurgery represents a substantial improvement in the microsurgical treatment of tumors, vascular malformations and other intracranial lesions. Despite the wide applicability and many fascinating aspects of image-guided navigation systems, a major drawback of this technology is they use images, mainly MRI pictures, acquired preoperatively, on which the plannin...

Hemophilic Pseudotumors: Diagnosis and Management

Prevention is essential for avoiding the complications of muscle hematomas (pseudotumors, compartment syndromesand peripheral nerve lesions) in hemophilic patients. This is achieved through early diagnosis of muscle hematomasand proper long-term hematological treatment until they have resolved (confirmed by image studies). Ultrasound-guidedpercutaneous drainage could be benefi...

Utilizing ultrasound as a surface digitization tool in image guided liver surgery

Intraoperative ultrasound imaging is a commonly used modality for image guided surgery and can be used to monitor changes from pre-operative data in real time. Often a mapping of the liver surface is required to achieve image-tophysical alignment for image guided liver surgery. Laser range scans and tracked optical stylus instruments have both been utilized in the past to create an intraoperati...

The Surgeon's Contribution to Image-Guided Oncology

BACKGROUND Advances in surgical and in imaging technology permit the performance of complex tumour resections in a safe and oncologically correct manner. To date, this has mainly implicated refined preoperative imaging methods, such as three-dimensional computer-assisted planning (3D-CASP). With the advent of modern hybrid operating rooms, intraoperative imaging has spread and various technique...

Evaluation of model-based deformation correction in image-guided liver surgery via tracked intraoperative ultrasound.

Soft-tissue deformation represents a significant error source in current surgical navigation systems used for open hepatic procedures. While numerous algorithms have been proposed to rectify the tissue deformation that is encountered during open liver surgery, clinical validation of the proposed methods has been limited to surface-based metrics, and subsurface validation has largely been perfor...
